Microbial Sitcoms: Hacking the Interspecies Interface (2025) feat. Mark Wang.​ Since the Stone Age, the power dynamics between humans and nonhumans have fluctuated between domestic inclusion and marginalization. Due to their microscopic scale, microorganisms have remained "absent" from human cultural activity. This project initiates a critical experiment: through scientific collaboration, we treat microorganisms as living data to develop a media system encompassing moving images, sculptures, installations, and live performances.
At the core of the installation is a dual-function projection interface: it serves as both a narrative output for the audience and a literal energy source for the photosynthetic microorganisms. This technical intervention blurs the boundary between cultural production and biological metabolism, merging them into a single media ecosystem. Within this "Microscopic Theater," microbes are encoded as sitcom characters to challenge contemporary species ethics through absurd narratives. By critiquing how digital power structures dominate the representation of life, the final microbial essay film invites audiences into an unstable theater to recalibrate our connection with the "miniature Other."

Symbiophony: Interspecies Sonic Circuits. This project reconfigures the stage as a multi-species laboratory, where sound acts as a sensory interface between divergent biological and technical agents. Moving beyond human-centric performance, Symbiophony facilitates a radical interspecies collaboration. By employing the vegetable.machine.animal (VMA) methodology, living data—biopotentials from plants and fungi—is harvested and transcoded into control voltage. This process allows nonhuman organisms to actively modulate modular synthesizers, effectively granting them agency within the sonic landscape.

The performance operates as a dynamic feedback loop: while human performers (on violin, erhu, and electronics) respond to the shifting biological rhythms, the science objects and plasma experiments introduce stochastic environmental variables. In this trans-species improvisation, vibration becomes the common language through which breath, mycelial activity, and electronic oscillation identify one another. This is not just a concert, but an enactment of a temporary sonic dreamscape—a manifestation of coexistence where sound emerges as a tangible form of interspecies encounter and shared survival.
